IDEX – Status on project with major semiconductor
The planned technical activities in the evaluation project with a major semiconductor manufacturer announced in 2009, were completed in the fourth quarter 2010.
The project assessed the manufacturability, cost and commercialization of a silicon-based SmartFinger® sensor using the manufacturing processes of the semiconductor partner. “There are attractive markets for silicon-based swipe sensors, such as mobile phone markets,” says Ralph W. Bernstein, CEO of IDEX ASA. “A silicon-based sensor is complementary to our award-winning polymer based SmartFinger Film sensors, which are currently targeted primarily for biometric cards, tokens and other embedded solutions.”
Functional sensors have been made and tested, and the project deliveries were evaluated in the fourth quarter of 2010. The quality of the fingerprint images complies with or exceeds specifications and confirms a functionally successful SmartFinger design and implementation. However, further efforts will be required to achieve cost competitive manufacturing. The parties have therefore agreed to identify and review specific product prospects with the purpose to determine whether it will be profitable to make such investments. A final conclusion had been anticipated late in 2010. However, no conclusion was reached by end of the year and the work on specific product prospects and business opportunities continues in 2011.
