IDEX showcases SmartFinger Film fingerprint sensor technology implementations at CARTES Asia

Oslo, Norway, 23 March 2011: IDEX will show a number of products and solutions at the CARTES in Asia Exhibition and Conferences.

IDEX ASA will be demonstrating its award-winning SmartFinger® Film fingerprint sensor integrated into VALIDcardTM One Time Password (OTP) cards at the CARTES in Asia Exhibition and Conferences in Hong Kong 29-31 March 2011.

The patented IDEX SmartFinger Film is an ultra-thin and bendable fingerprint sensor offering low power consumption and superior biometric performance. SmartFinger Film is based on state-of-the-art, high-precision polymer technology and enables fingerprint sensors to be implemented in a card of the same size and thickness as a standard credit card.

The VALIDcard from Validus Technologies Inc. generates an OTP when the registered user swipes the finger over the embedded SmartFinger Film fingerprint sensor. By replacing passwords and pin codes with fingerprint authentication, controlled access can be provided in a secure and user-friendly manner.

The eGoTM project, in which IDEX is a partner, has been selected as finalist in the Asian SESAMES competition which is part of the CARTES in Asia event. The SmartFinger Film sensor technology is well suited for wearable eGo devices. The project is presented by Gemalto and is conducted by a Europe-wide group of companies and academic institutions working within a Catrene framework.

In addition, IDEX will be demonstrating a fingerprint module based on the SmartFinger Secure Processor (SSP). The SSP is a complete embedded authentication software solution that can be preinstalled on a standard microcontroller. The SSP interfaces and processes the input from fingerprint sensor and communicates securely with the system’s host controller. The module does all the processing required to acquire fingerprint images, build and store a small database of enrolled fingers, and matches fingerprint templates against the on-board database. This complete embedded biometric authentication solution provides a faster time-to-market for systems integrating biometric security based on SmartFinger sensors.

The communication between the SSP and the system controller is encrypted, and there is a choice between four different interfaces: USB, UART, I2C and SPI. The SSP software is implemented on a standard off-the-shelf Cortex/M3 microcontroller, which can be delivered with a sensor or as part of a complete biometric module.

“IDEX looks forward to participate at CARTES Asia”, says Ralph W. Bernstein, CEO of IDEX. “The corresponding European CARTES exhibition in December, where SmartFinger Film won the SESAMES Award, created a remarkable amount of interest in our technology. Prospective customers and partners are now working on demonstrators and test configurations to explore how the IDEX SmartFinger Film can be implemented in their products,” Bernstein continues.
