IDEX enters into a strategic agreement for next generation fingerprint sensors with leading capacitive touch-sensing interface supplier Cypress Semiconductor Corporation
IDEX ASA has entered into a strategic partnership agreement with Cypress Semiconductor Corporation. The license agreement provides for the commitment of significant joint resources and intellectual property for the rapid development of second-generation fingerprint sensor technology, high-volume manufacturing, product supply and application support to established mobile customer channels. Cypress is the world leader in capacitive user interface touch controllers. IDEX’s patented fingerprint sensing technology will enable Cypress to offer combined touchscreen and fingerprint sensor solutions for mobile devices, significantly accelerating the mass-market adoption.
The resulting sensor solutions will be extremely compact, support next-generation features and be cost-efficient, supporting IDEX’s disruptive two-part sensor solutions for multiple mass market applications. This solution leverages the acquired PicoField patents combined with IDEX intellectual property, where the separation of the silicon circuit from the sensing area enables lower cost than current silicon sensors of equivalent performance, underlining the IDEX sensor’s competitive advantage in the market.
Cypress will promote the fingerprint sensor solution alongside touchscreen applications and supply the sensor products to major handset vendors in the mobile market, leveraging Cypress’s established first-tier channels and mass production capabilities. Cypress serves numerous major markets, including consumer, mobile handsets, computation, data communications, automotive, industrial and military.
“Cypress is pleased to partner with IDEX to bring their innovative, high-performance fingerprint recognition technology to our well-established customer base in the mobile, wearables and Internet of Things markets,” said Hassane El-Khoury, Executive Vice President of the Programmable Systems Division at Cypress. “This partnership will enable us to sell fingerprint-sensing and touch-sensing solutions together to our customers, building on our success with more than a billion capacitive touch controllers shipped.”
“I am extremely pleased with this significant agreement with Cypress. This represents a key progression in IDEX’s commercialisation strategy to capture significant share in the rapidly expanding mass market for fingerprint sensors,” said Dr. Hemant Mardia, CEO of IDEX. “The partnership with Cypress complements and enhances our existing modularization and software algorithm partnerships. The partnership allows IDEX to deliver high-quality fingerprint sensor solutions in high volumes to customers in multiple markets including smartphone, tablets, wearables, identity cards and Internet of Things. Cypress’s leadership in semiconductor design, touchscreen knowhow and excellence in high-quality manufacturing, combined with IDEX’s unique sensors will satisfy the demand for a new generation of fingerprint solutions for mobile customers.”
IDEX expects this partnership to realize additional sensor and royalty revenues commencing in 2015. This will expand on the recent first-generation touch and swipe sensor product launches which are sampling with multiple customers for program insertion during the second quarter of 2014 with volumes expected during the second half of 2014.
